BreatheWell For Teens - A Case Study

Background

Miss W was 14 when she commenced BreatheWell for Teens. At that time she had a long history of being unable to breathe through her nose easily. She had undergone ENT surgery to assist with this, however continued to find her nose blocked most of the time. Miss W suffered hayfever, recurrent colds and respiratory illness and felt she was very slow to recover from her ENT surgery overall. Miss W reported low energy levels - her parents felt she was more tired than you would expect, was slow to get going in the mornings and was never truly refreshed and energised. Miss W’s ENT surgeon also reported she had a very high and narrow upper palate. 

 

Symptoms

Miss W (and her parents) reported that she breathed only through her mouth at all times. She found it very uncomfortable to breathe through her nose - feeling she was unable to get enough air. Miss W was a light sleeper - easily woken and restless through the night. She persistently felt drained / fatigued despite sufficient sleep, a healthy diet and regular exercise. Miss W was a bit of a “worrier” and worried about everyday things more than she needed to. Miss W felt her breathing restricted her exercise capacity at times. 

 

The BreatheWell for Teens Program

Miss W and her mother were keen students of the program. Over the course of 4 weeks, we completed the 4 education modules of the course ensuring that Miss W had a solid understanding of the science of breathing. These sessions also included structured practice outlines and specific tools to allow Miss W to “unblock her nose” and commence nasal breathing in a comfortable and safe manner. This allowed Miss W to transition to comfortable nasal breathing for all sedentary and light activities. For this component of the program, Miss W completed her daily practice on the school bus.

Once we had achieved this milestone, and Miss W’s sleep was significantly improved, we progressed to ensuring Miss W maintained her improved breathing during activity and exercise. These sessions were structured and tailored specifically to Miss W’s areas of interest (running & horse riding). Miss W worked on this component for another 4 weeks, while also mastering some specific breathing tools to assist with emotional regulation. These tools are an essential part of the BreatheWell for Teens Program, enabling teens to use their breathing to assist in times of nerves, anxiety, emotional distress & sadness. 

Miss W and her mother, were excellent clients - they worked hard to apply the techniques and strategies of The BreatheWell for Teens Program into their daily routine. Once we established a consistent, regular routine, Miss W was able to complete her practice on the school bus, without adding to her commitments. Miss W quickly felt the benefit of the practice sessions, ensuring she was motivated to complete the daily sessions as a means to clear her mind, focus her thoughts and prepare for the day ahead.

The Results (Miss W’s view)

The changes in Miss W’s life as she worked through The BreatheWell for Teens Program were significant. Within 4 weeks, she was able to comfortably breathe quietly and gently through her nose at all times. She found this method of breathing fulfilling and comfortable very quickly. Miss W’s sleep was significantly more refreshing, fulfilling and deep. Her energy levels increased dramatically, she ceased worrying about minor issues, and her mood improved overall. Miss W also reported improved exercise capacity and endurance

On completion of the program, Mrs W’s symptoms had reduced by more than 75% and her final assessment revealed:

  • Much improved quality of sleep
  • Improved mental focus
  • No worry, apprehension
  • Fulfilling nasal breathing
  • Occasional hayfever 
  • Fantastic energy levels
  • Sense of calm and control across her life
  • Increased exercise capacity

 

The Results - my view

Confirming Miss W’s report are my key measurements - When Miss W commenced the program, she was taking 20 breaths every minute, she was breathing through her mouth 100% of the time, her breathing was audible, and she was breathing into her upper chest and neck. At the completion of the program, Miss W was taking only 10 breaths / minute (the ideal human breathing rate), was breathing through her nose at all times, quietly and evenly even when she was exercising. 

Miss W now felt she was free from the stranglehold that fatigue had placed on her life. She was energised, clear headed and decisive, and less troubled by everyday worries. Her sleep was refreshing and she woke ready to take on each day. Miss W felt more confident socially and academically and her parents reported the same.

Significantly, Miss W was able to apply the specific tools learnt in many different situations, assisting her to manage unexpected and confronting events in a calm and composed manner. She grew in confidence with these techniques at her disposal.

Miss W most definitely achieved You, As New by completing The BreatheWell For Teens Program, and is now able to really live her best life, with the confidence to tackle opportunities and new experiences as they present.
